Dans un village rural chinois, Xiaoxian, une jeune fille de 12 ans, se souvient de sa famille et de son village. En 7 jours, elle est témoin de trois morts et de deux naissances, dont la mort de sa propre mère en donnant naissance à sa quatrième sœur.

Un hommage sincère de Li Dongmei à sa mère décédée. La réalisatrice évoque son enfance de manière calme et condensé en utilisant des plans séquences sobres et de longs silence pour transmettre ses émotions intimes dans une complainte féminine délicate et émouvante.
